- חַיְיתָאII, חַיְתָא f. ch. = h. חַיָּה II, 1) lying-in woman. Targ. Y. Deut. 28:12 (cmp. Taan.2a, sq.). Koh. R. to III, 2 ולמה … לה ח׳וכ׳ and why do they call her ḥaytha? Because she was dying and is recovering. 3) midwife. Targ. Gen. 35:17.Y.Keth.V, 30a, v. חֲכַם. Gen. R. s. 60 (prov.) בין ח׳ למחבלתא וב׳ between the midwife and the travailing woman, the child of the poor woman dies.Pl. חַיָּיתָא, חַיָּ׳. Targ. Ex. 1:15.Y.Sabb.III, end, 16c שאלון לח׳ ask the midwives (about their usages on the Sabbath); אמרה ליה ליכא חַיָּיא said she to him, there is no midwife (in the place).
